The Origins of our 'Straight Arrows' Name
Psalm 127:
Unless the Lord builds the house they labor in vain who build it.
Unless the Lord guards the city, the watchmen stay awake in vain.
It is vain to rise up early, to stay up late, to eat the bread of sorrows;
For so he gives to his beloved even in his sleep.
Behold, Children are a heritage of the Lord.
The fruit of the womb is his reward
Like arrows in the hand of a mighty man,
so are the children of one's youth.
Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them;
They shall not be ashamed when they speak to their enemies in the gate.
The Bible says,
"children are like arrows in the hand of a mighty man...they will not be ashamed when they speak to their enemies in the gate." (Psalm 127)
In Old Testament times, gates were pretty important places. They were the hubs of power where the respected elders and leaders of the city met to discuss politics and make legal decisions. Pretty much anybody who was anybody important went down to put their two-sense in at the city gate to promote justice and order and prosperity for the whole community. These Godly men however, depended on their children to carry on after them. Their legacy and reputation hung on whether or not they had prepared their children to do battle with their enemies, from within or from without. These fathers trained their sons and daughters to represent their family name honorably and to value duty to their community. In doing so, they multiplied their influence.We have named our ranch Straight Arrows to remind us, as parents, to fulfill our responsibility to raise our 
four children to follow these same Biblical principles. We believe that this will ultimately make a difference in every "arena" of their lives. We are prayerfully trying to aim them in the right direction. May they, with God's help, "hit the mark" as ambassadors for our Lord and Savior.
It was Jesus Christ, God Himself in human flesh, who demonstrated the paradox that these humble beasts of burden were truly "fit for a King." Their sure-footedness, their reliability, their faithfulness, their gentleness, their affection, their strength, their protective spirit, their lowly, unasssuming nature, even the very cross on their backs remind us of the One who humbled Himself for our sake. Maybe they have something to teach us after all.
"But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; and the base things of this world...God has chosen." (I Cor. 1:27-28)
"God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble" (Jas. 4:6)
"But he who is greatest among you shall be your servant. And whoever exalts himself will be abased, and he who humbles himself will be exalted." (Matt. 23:11-12)
